In the late 1980's I started doing yoga. I'd go to classes and find a place in the back row with the other guys because there were always lithe young women that could do the poses beautifully and all the guys looked pretty bad. I noticed that most of the guys didn't come back for more lessons. I met one on the street and asked him why he didn't continue. He said he couldn't "compete" with the women and felt pretty stupid about it. I decided to learn to teach yoga and offer it to just men. I went to San Francisco and attended classes that focused on
Integral Hatha Yoga.
Swami Satchidananda was the spritual leader. I graduated on March 31, 1991 and began teaching the next day. April Fools Day! Men came to learn and not feel awkward because everyone looked bad. They'd fart and groan and nobody cared. I taught for exactly 10 years and decided to take a break. Here's one of the classes.
